Etiquette

Give Guests Advance Notice

Many guests will use this as vacation time and need to request time off of work. 8-12 months in advance will help them to plan & budget accordingly.

Welcome Gifts For Guests

It is not required, but a nice gesture to give your guests a welcome gift. Along with this, it's helpful to provide wedding info & schedules.

Hosting a Rehearsal Dinner

When guests make a commitment to attend your destination wedding, it is courteous to include them in any pre-wedding festivities. Instead of a rehearsal dinner, you could opt for a cocktail party, beach bonfire, or a group excursion.

Wedding Day Attire

It is helpful to guests if you inform them of your expectations for the wedding day attire. Will this be black tie, cocktail, “festive” or beach attire, an all white attire, etc., Keep location and weather in mind. A mid-day, barefoot beach wedding may call for more casual (and breathable) outfit choices, while you may want dressier attire for an evening or church wedding.

The Wedding Reception

It goes without saying that when guests make the trek for your destination wedding, they will expect some sort of reception following the ceremony. A traditional group dinner reception, extravagant entertainment, or perhaps a private group dinner catamaran? That choice is yours to make, but the guests will appreciate something.

Planning Your Honeymoon

Since some guests might use this experience as their vacation, they may want to extend their stay after your wedding. If you don't want to run into your guests after the wedding, you might consider a resort change or an island change to have a "honeymoon". This will be easier for guests to understand than asking them to leave the day after your wedding to have alone time.

Vendor Tipping Guidelines

Things to consider

Remember, gratuities are never expected or required, but they are always greatly appreciated. If you are considering gifting gratuities for your vendors, I have some suggested amounts below that are applicable to Mexico, Costa Rica and the Caribbean Islands. Be sure to organize your tips into blank envelopes, seal and label them to have your wedding planner or coordinator distribute accordingly. Please check your contracts as the service charge for some services may already be included (i.e food)

Bartenders $25-$75

$20-40 a bartender. Your bartenders should keep the party going! Generally, there are 1-2 bartenders per event. Consider that there is likely going to be 2 bartenders, and if you have more than 100 guests, 3 bartenders.

Photography/Videography $25-$75

If a friend/family is paid to attend and provide this service, a tip of $100 per person may be nice, or you can offer to upgrade their room, take them on an excursion, or extend their stay. If you opt to use the hotel’s photographer, they will likely not be the owner of the company, so consider $25-75 a person depending on the quality and length of time of their services.

DJ or Musicians $20-$40

$20-$40 a person, or 10% of the total cost. If your DJ company is also supplying a dancefloor (and installation), photo booth, or lighting services, you should check to see how many staff will be assisting.

Officient $50

If you are having a friend or family member perform your ceremony, consider on of the following ideas: $50-$100, a room upgrade or excursion.

Onsite Wedding Coordinator $50 - $150

You've likely worked with this person for several months. They won't expect a tip, but it would be a nice gesture

Solon Hair/Make-up 15%-20%

If a friend/family member paid to travel to your wedding and doing complimentary, a gift, room upgrade, or excursion would be a kind gesture
